Huge Green Card increase before House Judiciary committee 9-17-08

<<<<< JOB DESTRUCTION NEWSLETTER No. 1919 -- 9/16/2008 >>>>>
On Wednesday Sept 17th The House Judiciary Committee will do markups of the
bills to allow large numbers of foreign workers into the U.S. If they agree on
the markups, the bills could go to a floor vote at any time. These bills are
progressing very fast and seem to be picking up more support.
Any and all of these awful pieces of immigration legislation will be
discussed:
1) H.R. 5882 -- gives green cards to 550,000 foreign workers and their
extended families.
2) H.R. 5924 -- lifts the cap for foreign nurses and therapists until 2011.
3) H.R. 5950 -- would require the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to
give full medical and mental health care to all immigration alien detainees in
DHS custody.
4) H.R. 6020 -- would grant amnesty to illegal aliens who serve in the
military. It will also give amnesty to their families.
The only way this catastrophe is going to be stopped is for you to work with
the immigration organizations that have phone call and fax campaigns.
I'm including three alerts from NumbersUSA, FAIR, and CAPS.

Financial Industry Collapsing -- But Some In Congress Still Trying To Give
Away More US Jobs To Foreign Workers
By Roy Beck, Updated Tuesday, September 16, 2008, 5:43 PM
Regardless of all the denials you are getting when you call Senate offices,
here is the basic story we are hearing from allied sources in both Democratic
and Republican offices:
1. A handful of Republican Senate offices -- heavily tied to Chamber of
Commerce lobbyists -- have stalled passage of the re-authorization of the E-
Verify program used by state and local governments to require that businesses
keep illegal aliens out of jobs.
2. Democratic Senate Majority Leader Reid (Nevada) is allowing these few
Senate Republicans to work with Sen. Menendez (D-N.J.) to hold up the re-
authorization until they work out some kind of deal for a lot more foreign
workers to next year be given U.S. jobs -- permanently.
Ultimate responsibility for this mess lies with Democrat Reid and the Senate
Republican Leadership who are allowing a few rogue offices of their own Party
to continue the stall that Sen. Menendez started earlier in the summer. Both
Senate leaders could step to the plate and agree to immediately bring up the
"clean" re-authorization bill passed last month by the U.S. House. It would
pass overwhelmingly.
Instead, the employment fate of hundreds of thousands of Americans next year
is in the air while the rogue Republicans and Democrat Menendez decide how
many of their jobs should be given to foreign workers next year.
One of the reasons the staffers you call claim you don't know what you are
talking about is because THEY don't know.
As often is the case on immigration matters, NumbersUSA's Capitol Hill Team
knows some of the backroom details before most of the congressional offices
know. Your job in faxing and phoning is to break through the fog and get each
Senate office to focus on the fact that there really are negotiations underway
to give away massive numbers of additional U.S. jobs to foreign workers next
year.
The key thing you can say to the Senate staffers is that if this were not so,
why hasn't the Senate already voted through the House's re-authorization bill.
DESPITE FINANCIAL INDUSTRY CRISIS, SENATE LEADERS WON'T PROTECT U.S.
WORKERS
NumbersUSA cannot get commitments from key Senate leaders that they will
ensure that E-Verify will go through without an immigration increase tied to
it.
This was difficult to understand a week ago.
Now, it is impossible to understand. Have the Senators not seen the headlines
this week of the further collapsing of our nation's financial industry? All of
this collapse bodes ill indeed for jobs over the next year. The Senate should
be CUTTING next year's immigration totals, not increasing them.
To make matters worse, we are having to fight a two-front war, with the House
Judiciary likely to reconvene tomorrow to try again to pass a small amnesty
AND a giant increase in foreign workers. (Read here about your success in
pushing back attempts in the House last week.)
THESE AMERICANS BEING SACRIFICED IN BACKROOM SENATE TALKS In August, 592,000
additional Americans were added to the official unemployment rolls.
Total number of Americans who are officially unemployed, looking for a job and
can't find one? 8.28 million!
Current official unemployment rate (highest in 5 years)? 6% Official
unemployment rate considerably higher for Hispanic women: 8.7% Rate twice as
high for Black American men: 12.3%!
Look to see whether Sen. McCain or Sen. Obama show any concerns at all for
these people in their Presidential races.
They are expressing concern about the financial collapse and what that will do
to American workers. But where do the two candidates stand on giving even more
U.S. jobs away to foreign workers? It looks like they are fighting now over
who is most supportive of giving an amnesty to 12 million illegal aliens.
PHONE YOUR SENATORS
Call your two U.S. Senators at 202-224-3121.
Our message to every Senate office has to be:
1. No increase in immigration and foreign workers of any kind.
2. Re-authorize E-Verify without any strings -- just like the House did a
month ago.
Ask your two Senators to talk to the Leadership of their own Party and urge
them to turn their backs on the rogue Senate offices pushing to import more
foreign workers in the midst of a very troubled economy and bleak immediate
job prospects.

American Workers!
http://www.fairus.org/
Thanks to your calls and e-mails last week, efforts to pass four
detrimental immigration-related bills stalled in the House Judiciary
Committee. Unfortunately, victory was short-lived. Committee leaders
remain committed to passing these bills, which would flood the workplace
with hundreds of thousands of worker visas. The Judiciary Committee is
meeting again Wednesday, September 17th for another try!
Three of the four bills to be considered in Wednesday's markup amount to
nothing more than gifts to big business special interests seeking to
dramatically increase the stream of cheap foreign labor coming into the
American workforce during these tough economic times:
H.R. 5882 would reach back to 1992 and "recapture" employment-based and
family-based visas, potentially adding over 550,000 new green cards.
H.R. 5924 would lift the cap on employment-based visas for nurses and
physical therapists until 2011.
H.R. 6020 would grant amnesty to illegal aliens who are family members of
armed forces personnel.
In addition, the House Judiciary Committee will be considering H.R.5950,
which sets forth vast new alien detainee healthcare requirements that
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) would have to implement in all of
its detention centers. ICE facilities - which have a mortality rate far
below the averages for both the U.S. jail system and the general public -
already provide every detainee with comprehensive medical screenings, which
often result in original diagnosis and treatment of chronic conditions.
This unnecessary bill - a clear tactic by open borders advocates to slow
law enforcement - will only serve to add extra bureaucratic burden to ICE.
Please, call your Representative right now and remind them that the economy
is ailing and the last thing America needs is more work visas. Tell them
you want them to pass true immigration reform legislation that restores
common sense and integrity to our immigration system, secures the border,
and imposes tough sanctions on employers addicted to cheap labor.
Then, please call Members of the House Judiciary Committee today and tell
them not to bow to cheap labor interests and that you oppose each one of
these bills!

ACTION ALERT! House leadership wants to give half million jobs to foreign
workers!
Even though the official unemployment rate climbed to its highest level in
the last five years, Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), the chair of the House
immigration subcommittee, is seeking to add 550,000 green cards for foreign
workers next year.
The Judiciary Committee may vote this week on HR 5882 to give hundreds of
thousands more American jobs to foreign workers. The bill is packaged as a
means of "recapturing" unused visas from previous years, but, in fact,
unused visas already roll over to the following year. The legislation
contrives a formula to double-count the unused visas by adding them to
multiple categories to effect a huge total increase.
It is shocking that Congress would consider this action while American
workers are struggling to find jobs and support their families. The bill is
simply a concession to the cheap-labor lobby that sees immigration as a
means of undercutting American workers.
ACTION NEEDED
Tell your Congressional Representative to oppose this effort to give
American jobs away to foreign workers. Send a fax or an e-mail by entering
your ZIP Code and clicking "Go!" below.
This bill may move quickly so you may also want to call your Congress
member, Rep. Lofgren and Speaker Pelosi, through the Capitol Switchboard at
202-224-3121.
