The Senate immigration bill stalled over procedural issues and partisan
politics. Senators are leaving town for two weeks so American workers are
getting a temporary stay of execution.
It's very important to keep in mind that the Senate didn't vote against the
bill because they disagree with each other about allowing amnesty,
increasing H-1B, creating the F-4 visa, or allowing millions of new "guest
workers" to flood across our borders. The Republicans were giving the
Democrats everything they wanted so the question arises as to what
happened. The best theory I have heard so far on why the impasse occurred
is that the Democrats didn't want the Republicans to get all the credit for
granting amnesty to the illegal aliens. In simple terms, the disastrous
affects this bill will have on U.S. citizens wasn't really the issue - both
parties are competing to get the credit for "reforming" our immigration
system into an open-border giveaway.
HERE IS THE BIG SURPRISE!
Guess who the Latinos are blaming for the Senate's failure to pass the bill
- the Democrats! That's because they understand that the Republicans were
willing to give them everything including the kitchen sink. Read the press
release below by the "The Latino Coalition" to understand why they are
seething with anger.
Senators may be going home, but don't think for a second that you can take
it easy and relax. On Monday there will be huge demonstrations by the
open-border crowd. In Phoenix, Arizona it's estimated that 100,000 could be
marching in protest - and they are going to direct their wrath on every
Senator that voted "NAY". At least 17 other major cities will have similar
demonstrations. The Democrats are going to catch hell for not compromising
with the Republicans so don't be surprised if they have a major attitude
change when they come back to Washington.
I am getting email from many organizations that are patting themselves on
the back for mobilizing vast numbers of Americans to phone and fax the
Senators. They deserve credit but the celebrations are very premature.
Don't fool yourselves into thinking the battle against the Specter or
McKennedy bills is over. Next week the other side will have their say, and
their voice will be much louder than the tiny whisper from the belabored
citizens of the United States.

Latino Leaders Condemn the Actions of Senate Minority Leader Reid to Block
Passage of Comprehensive Immigration Reform

WASHINGTON, April 7 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Board of Directors of The Latino
Coalition (TLC) strongly condemns the actions of Senate Minority Leader
Harry Reid for not allowing an immigration bill to go forward in the Senate
floor. His opposition to allowing debates and votes on amendments to the
Immigration Reform legislation is tantamount to opposing real reform.
"Senator Reid has blocked and obstructed every possible avenue to get a
final bill approved by the United States Senate," said TLC President Robert
Deposada. "Senator Reid has shown that he is willing to put partisan
politics over the needs of our community and the country. If there were
enough votes to kill all amendments to the compromise language of
Martinez-Hagel, why then would the Democratic leader oppose bringing these
amendments to the floor and cause the collapse of the first real chance in
20 years for comprehensive reform of our immigration policies? The fact is
that his actions this week stand side by side with immigration reform
opponents like Congressman Tom Tancredo. Both of them prefer to have this
issue for partisan gains rather than reaching a common-sense solution."
"Everyone agrees that our immigration system is broken and needs to be
reformed now," said HBR President Honorio Padron of Chicago. "However,
irresponsible politicians on both sides of the aisle have made a tactical
decision to make sure that no solution is reached in order to keep the
issue alive for political campaigns, at the expense of our national and
economic security. All Latino leaders should call on Senator Reid and
express our outrage at his actions."
"Why is the Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid so afraid of debating and
voting on amendments to the immigration reform bill?" said the President of
the National Coalition of Latino Clergy and Religious Leaders, Reverend
Miguel Rivera of New Jersey. "All Senators deserve the right to present
amendments, and many of those amendments are very valid. Using procedural
efforts to prevent a final vote is not acceptable. He cannot tell Latino
leaders on one hand that he supports comprehensive immigration reform, and
on the other hand take this kind of action against it. This defines the art
of speaking from both sides of his mouth. And our community will no longer
fall for it."
The Latino Coalition is a non-profit, non-partisan organization based in
Washington, D.C. TLC was established to address policy issues that directly
affect the well-being of Hispanics in the United States. TLC's agenda is to
develop and promote policies that will foster economic equivalency and
enhance overall business, economic, and social development of Hispanics.
