On May 22, 2003, the CNN/Moneyline Lou Dobbs had an excellent show on
their "Exporting America" series that covered the H-1B and outsourcing
issue. ZaZona.com is now home to a 20 minute excerpt of this show. The
show was aired on subsequent evenings but significant parts of it were
cut out, including the interview with Rep. DeFazio. DeFazio's interview
was very compelling because he discussed the dubious voice vote in the
year 2000 to increase the H-1B visa cap. DeFazio's interview marked the
first time this scandalous vote has been discussed in public.
There are other interesting comments from Fritz Hollings on NAFTA as
well as interviews of Michael Roberts, Pete Bennett, Daniel Soong and
Ron Hira.

-------- The Story Behind the Video -------------------------
This video clip is a team effort and the story behind it illustrates
how American workers from different parts of the country can cooperate
and unite to fight H-1B.
Problem #1: Obtaining a recording of the show
When I tuned in to watch the Lou Dobbs show on CNN I didn't expect very
much. Boy was I surprised! That was the best TV show on H-1B I had ever
seen. Unfortunately I didn't record it and nobody else I contacted did
either. In a last ditch attempt to get the original broadcast I sent
out a plea for help to activists all over the country asking if anybody
recorded the original broadcast.
Mary Kirschenbaum from Tennessee came to the rescue! She recorded the
entire "Exporting America" series and she verified that it contained
the full version of the H-1B broadcast.
Problem #2: Digitizing the recording
I don't have the video capture equipment to digitize the video but
fortunately Richard Armstrong from Colorado does. Richard is the
webmaster of http://www.hireamericancitizens.org and will put this
video along with some others such as the Mike Emmons story on DVD.
Richard agreed to do the work once Mary mailed him the tape. Mary
rushed to the post office and put the tape in the mail. Richard's
project was very time consuming because he had a lot of video editing
and processing to do. Processing video takes a lot of patience and
computing time.
Problem #3: Converting the recording to streaming video
Now it was my turn. Richard Armstrong and I set up file sharing so that
we could send files to each other. After some arduous experimentation
we finally decided what file format would work best for me to work on
(MPEG-1).
I have never dealt with streaming video so there was a learning curve
involved. (Note: I taught myself how to do this conversion without any
help from H-1B training funds!)
I decided to use the RealOne Helix streaming video server because my
shared web service supports that format. Converting the MPEG-1 to
RealVideo takes about 6 hours on my computer, and I had to do it
several times to get it right.
Problem #4: Financing the effort
OK, I had a video but the next problem was more formidable than tech
issues. My budget is very limited and I knew that the huge bandwidth
requirements would cost money that I don't have. Fortunately I found a
generous donor who wishes to remain anonymous that agreed to cover my
costs.
You can help me with the money issue just by using your mouse. You will
notice several ads on my page as well as some of those annoying pop up
ads (sorry!). Support me by clicking on some of these ads. I get paid a
few pennies when somebody clicks on them, and that can add up. It
doesn't help to click each ad more than once since they don't allow
multiple clicks from the same IP more than once every 24 hours. Of
course if you come back, click away!
The Programmer's Guild ad doesn't count on clicks because it isn't a
commercial banner ad, but you may want to find out what they have to
offer by going to their website.
