India to export cow urine, dung to US
New Delhi: India is planning to export compost and pesticides made from
the urine and dung of cows to the United States, a report said Tuesday.
The scheme is the brainchild of the Municipal Commission of Delhi
(MCD), which has been trying to round up the 35,000 or so stray cattle
on the streets of New Delhi, The Times of India said.
They can produce enough urine and dung to yield 160,000 tonnes of
vermicompost and 70,000 litres of biopesticide each day, it said.
"We plan to utilise the urine and dung these cows produce for export
purposes," a senior MDC officials said.
The MCD is in the process of purchasing trucks to be able to round up
the cattle and transport them to shelters where use can be made of the
dung and urine, the report said.
It has sought the expertise of a non-governmental organisation, the
Morarka Foundation, which specialises in eco-projects.
Vardhaman Bapna, chairman of the Morarka Foundation, said: "While there
is no dearth of cows in the United States, the demand for Indian cow
dung is high. In fact, chemical analysis reveals that the dung of
Indian cows scores over the US version by way of organic content. Not
surprisingly, we have received numerous enquiries from the US," The
Times of India quoted Bapna as saying.
